Music
demands permission - and money
Do you want to make any use of your video
- even if only to show it at home - you have to have permission for
using the music.
If you want permission to play a piece of music in your film, you will have to:
- Contact the record company, who has published the music.
- Tell them how you want to use the music.
- Wait for permission to play the music.
Maybe you will get your permission right away. If the music is Danish, you might be lucky to get a quick answer.
But - maybe the record company has to write abroad to get the permission. If that happens, you might have to wait for several months for an answer.
If the music is 'hot, or if you are going to use it in a commercial way, it might be expensive.
But if your film is uncommercial, artistic experimental, it might not be much easier.
In any case the record company has all legal rights.
Don't forget: It is a very sad exception to be forced to remake your entire production - because you suddenly found out, that you were not allowed to use exactly that piece of music - that was supposed to make your film one of the greatest ever seen.
In order to avoid this kind of disappointment, you have to ask for permission in the very beginning of your project.
A list of record companies is available at the workshop.
Music taxes
Koda-Gramex is a tax, paid in connection with music played in public.
It is always the owner of a (sendetilladelse(?)) who pays this tax. To be able to do that, you have to fill in a form and tell how many minutes and seconds you have been using, and which music has been played.
NCB tax is a cost you pay just to be allowed to play a piece of music in a film. This money is paid to the composer and to the writer.
When distributed for private people the price is 120 kr. a minute.
At public performance the price is 4-600 kr. a minute.
It is your responsibility to:
- Decide if you are going to pay NCB tax for your production.
- And - if you are going to - to make sure, that it will be paid.
Register your film
Once your production is nearing completion, we need some details for our database and film archive. Therefore, you must complete an "arkivark", with everything from format and length of the cast, crew to music rights, etc..It is important that the information is accurate.
You can download the archive sheet here
